WALL•E and EVE statues were just installed outside Videopolis in Discoveryland at Disneyland Paris.

It’s pretty amazing how EVE seems to be hovering in mid-air!

Lunch at Disney’s Soda Fountain & Studio Store

After enjoying the WALL•E movie and the Disney stage show at the El Capitan Theatre, we entered directly into Disney’s Soda Fountain & Studio Store. This was the second time we had been there this year — and we love it!

Hidden Mickey (okay, maybe not so hidden) in the section of the store with Hollywood-themed Disney items. See how many “Hidden” Mickey’s you can spot in the picture below!

A large portion of the Studio Store area of the Soda Fountain shop was devoted to WALL•E merchandise.

I bought one of those BnL (Buy n Large) coffee mug (lower right of the picture) and they really are large! Carol got a large souvenEAR Disney’s Soda Fountain & Studio Shop coffee mug.

Lunch was great! Good thing we didn’t overdo it on the popcorn during the movie.

Check out the mouse-eared bread bowl of New England Clam Chowder that Michael ate out of!

Did you see Goofy up there?

The WALL•E  Sundae looked real cute, but we were already stuffed. We didn’t want to look even more like the humans in the movie!

If we had ordered that, we would have needed BnL hoverchairs to get us out of there! 8=o)

WALL•E Stage Show & Movie at El Capitan Theatre

Here we are at the El Capitan Theatre box office, ready to see WALL•E in a beautifully restored theater with digital projection and digital sound! Take a look around!

I heard Sleeping Beauty and its stage show were great. And they also had reserved-seating breakfasts with Princess Aurora at the Disney ice cream shop next door!

Carol writes:
Among other things, a favorite 2008 Disney memory I have is going to the El Capitan movie theater Disney owns in Hollywood CA and seeing “WALL•E” there. It’s a restored 1920′s-1930′s movie palace, absolutely beautiful, with superb state of the art digital projection and sound. To see the best of Disney movies in there is better than any HDTV you could imagine! There is an organist who plays live music before the show and a live stage show, too! And an ice cream parlour next door that Disney owns, You should get a soda fountain old fashioned type lunch and ice cream fountain treat for dessert (and shop…. of course there’s a shop with it, this is Disney!!!!! )

My husband and I majored in communication arts, and my “majors” within that were both broadcast journalism and film. It is wonderful to see such a fine movie as “WALL•E” and in one of the best equipped theatres in the U.S., one that Disney owns, that is a restored historic building, across the street from the Kodak Theatre where the annual movie Oscars are handed out, and you can see the “Hollywood” sign in the hills from the El Capitan, and it’s on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, too! I would do it again! Soooooooooooo much fun!

We saw the “College Road Trip” Disney live action movie there in March 2008, but when “WALL•E” came out and we saw it in a theater near our home, it was so fine that the bug bit to see “Wall-E” there at the El Capitan Theatre hit us… So the last week of July 2008 we went all the way back. Worth it, worth it, worth it! And nothing like it at WDW !

Check it out here… disney.go.com/disneypictures/el_capitan/ …including any links to the Soda Fountain next door! Plan a trip sometime. The best and most convenient parking is in the basement of the Kodak Theatre across the street. The El Capitan box office can give you a list of the Disney stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame within a few blocks either side of the theatre.

Oh, and it’s also across the street from the famous Graumann’s (lately called Mann’s) Chinese Theatre, where the Hollywood stars would put their hand and footprints in cement on the sidewalk and autograph the cement. Lots of great sight-seeing to do. And immediately next door to the theatre where ABC-TV’s late night show “Jimmy Kimmel Live” is taped.

Disney went all out to redecorate the lobby and party room with little touches themed to WALL•E.

I never saw WALL•E and Eve buckle up…

The snack bars were tricked out in honor of the movie as well!

A special WALL•E popcorn bucket! We brought one home with us. We still have the one themed to the El Capitan Theatre itself when we saw “College Road Trip” at the theatre during Easter week.

They even borrowed space-themed educational displays from NASA.

 

 

The future is now… the ATM machine was out of order.

Even the doors to the restrooms got the WALL•E treatment!

Nothing inside the restrooms was themed to the movie, however…

I snuck into the downstairs party room, right before it was to start filling up for a party, and got these pictures…

The display by Microsoft wasn’t working… Figures!

When we entered to get our seat, the organist was performing. That’s always impressive!

The lights dimmed, the curtains rose, and the El Capitan Theatre’s sunrise over the California mountains display filled the entire width of the stage…

…which then transitioned into the Hollywood skyline at night.

Then we enjoyed the Disney stage show with Disney Characters and clips from the movies they appeared in.

The curtain falls to thunderous applause! Next, the motion picture part of the entertainment began with…

…trailers, followed by the Presto short, which looked great on the state-of-the-art digital screen.

Carol couldn’t resist taking these pictures when the WALL•E movie was being projected.

There is a convenient doorway connecting the theatre lobby to Disney’s Ice Cream & Studio Store.

“Down in New Orleans” song begins Disney’s “The Princess and the Frog”

Here is a video someone (not me) shot at Jazz Fest of Randy Newman performing “Down in New Orleans.” The video doesn’t show the complete song, because the person’s recorder stopped before the song ended. Randy performed the entire, complete song for us, but it is not all on that video. Here are the words to the first part of the song:

Randy Newman also said that he was with Dr. John earlier that day (in fact, I discovered later that Dr. John was right there backstage, listening to Randy Newman’s performance) and that Randy would sing the song for us now. I don’t know shorthard so I wasn’t able to get the entire lyrics written down (note: see the complete, updated lyrics below), but some of the phrases in this beautiful song include “In the Southland…”, “…prettiest women around…”, “Grab somebody, come on down, grab your paintbrush, gather ’round down in New Orleans…”, “Don’t be shy, do it down in New Orleans…”, and ends with the line “Dreams Do Come True Down In New Orleans.” This song will be the perfect start to “The Princess and the Frog” and it mentions New Orleans many times by name it it, plus the uplifting song is all about the city!

Randy said that Disney was here working on the movie, and according to Jon Pareles in today’s New York Times’, “This week, along with Jazzfest, he was recording a song with the New Orleans sage Dr. John for a movie about old New Orleans, ‘The Frog Princess.’”

It’s a small world, even at Jazz Fest!

Sometimes you just gotta say, “Walt was right!” It is a small world after all, even at Jazz Fest. Case in point: the photo above is a simulation of what really happened, and then what happened after I posted here on the travel blog about it, and here’s the story behind it.

Chris Romero was at Jazz Fest during Randy Newman’s performance, as I was, and he came across my posts about it here on this blog, quite by accident. He’s a HUGE fan of Randy Newman, but as it happens he is almost as enamored with Disney things as I am — but he never heard of my Disney Echo website before. He noticed that in one of my posts I had written about Randy Newman’s song set performed at Jazz Fest, but I couldn’t find all of the lyrics. He emailed me with a link to the lyrics of one of the songs I was missing, and I wrote him back and thanked him.

I also asked him if he was just a Randy Newman fan or also a Disney fan, and I got the response I’ve paraphrased above. Well, I pointed him in the direction of my Disney Echo forums, and helped him join. He asked me if I was up front in the crowd, and I replied that I was indeed up front, but not in the reserved section — I was about 7 people back from there. I also wrote him that when the camera on stage panned the crowd for the “You’re Dead!” song, I was shown on the big screen waving my iPhone at the stage as I sang, and I was wearing a straw hat I bought previously in Congo Square.

He replied that he remembered seeing me on the screen! He “did see someone on the jumbotron holding up an iphone. Can’t be two fans like that!”

He’s right. The screen was so big I could see myself even though I was on the other side of the stage from it! The iPhone he saw me holding (simulated in the picture above) is the one I used to take the pictures and post the trip report from.

Well, I’m happy to tell you all that Chris is now our newest EchoEar on the Disney Echo, and Chris is happy about it, too. He wrote, “I can’t thank you enough for letting me in on this site. Good lord, it’s door-to-door Mouse. I love it!”

5) “Potholes in Memory Lane” – Randy Newman played a song he first sang on a European tour in the summer of 2006, which is a quirky, humorous song about losing your memory when you get older and how it is good in the way you can forget the unhappy times. It starts with “I love women…” and lyrics in it include “God bless the pothole, down on memory lane… Some big ones open up, take some of the memories that do remain.”

19) “Rednecks” – There was a big response of approval from the audience when he sang about LSU and many weresinging along with “We’re Rednecks…”. Afterwards, back behind the stage, I think I overheard John Lasseter remarking to friends about the audience participation, perhaps thinking how “The Princess and the Frog” might be received. Randy Newman announced after seeing this song that he was sorry he had to use the word, but found no way around it.

As my wife puts it, what’s funny is that the Louisiana-centric crowd that day at Jazz Fest is rabidly fans of LSU, yet the song “Rednecks” is derogatory of LSU, and still they cheered it because he sang “LSU”! Randy Newman’s songs at some time or other or some lyric lines or other probably offend a lot of people in the way that his Pixar compositions might otherwise charm and eloquently move others. Yet, behind the words astute listeners will detect that often Randy is poking fun at exactly what he appears to be celebrating.

22) “Louisiana 1927″ – The New York Times today quoted what Randy Newman said before performing this song at the Jazz Fest yesterday, about the aftermath of Katrina: “While he can usually be counted on for droll stage patter, he groped for words when he spoke about seeing parts of New Orleans still in ruins: ‘It’s an awful, awful thing that they would let this … awful thing that they would let those blocks and blocks of houses and lives, and people that they’ll never come back to, and say that, y’know, morale is up.’ He added that the flashy things ‘like the Jazzfest and the Mardi Gras, we can do that.’ That got a few laughs. ‘I would like to apologize for the federal government,’ he said, getting more. ‘This city is not good at fixing things.
