MyMagic+

20130107-134350.jpg
Do you look forward to more of Disney’s next generation advances like “MyMagic+”?

Tom Staggs, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman, wrote about MyMagic+ today on the Disney Parks blog:

“A major component of MyMagic+ is the new My Disney Experience website and mobile app, which gives guests planning their trip the latest information on all Walt Disney World Resort has to offer. We know that some people like to plan every aspect of their Disney vacation in advance while others like to plan very little, letting their day unfold spontaneously.”

“No matter where guests fall in that spectrum, My Disney Experience gives them the flexibility to plan as much or as little as they’d like to create the exact Disney experience they want. They can book dining and other experiences and reserve times for their favorite attractions, shows and more through an enhanced FastPass system, FastPass+. Once they arrive, they can use their smart phones to spontaneously change their plans in the moment, exploring our parks at their own pace and getting the most out of their visit.”

4,329 films were submitted to the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. This Disney Echo blog had 28,000 views in 2012. If each view were a film, this blog would power 6 Film Festivals. But probably not very well.

Disney Echo readers are weird. Or maybe I’m weird, I forget. But here are the posts that somehow got the most views in 2012:

Disney’s DCA DWI Dichotomy: Food, Wine and Carsland

Cars Land Food and Wine Festival parody logo

Due to all the construction going on to improve Disney California Adnenture, the park’s annual Food & Wine Festival has been cancelled for 2011 and 2012.

I can’t wait until Carsland opens at DCA and the Food & Wine Festival comes back. Imagine the “DO Drink & Drive” marketing opportunities!

Flo could sell Piston Cup refills of blended wine… “Organic fuel,” according to Fillmore.

Mater could say, “Git-R-Drunk!” and Lightning McQueen could reply, “Ka-chow! Ker-rash!”

Then they could run this actual clip from the movie:

Lightning McQueen: You know, race cars don’t need headlights, because the track is always lit.
Dusty Rust-eze: Well, so is my brother, but he still needs headlights!

Disneyland PeopleMover, Innoventions replacement, Tomorrowland revamp, Frontierland expansion approved? Here’s why

The Astro Orbiter in its current location, seen here from inside the Plaza Inn restaurant, doesn't blend well with that area's turn-of-the-century theming and also clogs the entrance to Tomorrowland from the Hub (Disneyland's Central Plaza).

The buzz from Disneyland insiders is that the Suits in charge there know they need to increase the number of attractions in order to deal with that park’s crowded conditions.

It’s a great, big, beautiful Tomorrowland!

Because of that, rumor has it that Disney Imagineering projects have been approved to revamp Tomorrowland — including moving the Astro Orbiter out of that land’s crowded Central Plaza walkway and returning them back to the old Rocket Jets location, flying high over the heart of Tomorrowland with, get this, a new PeopleMover below it as well as a replacement for Innoventions in the old Carousel Theater/America Sings building.

I’d love to see all of that happen as well as a new attraction in that interesting building (hopefully utilizing its unique rotating ring section). It is way past time to evict the Elias family out of their Innoventions Dream Home on 360 Tomorrowland Way. They can continue celebrating their son’s “amazing” soccer goal elsewhere… or move with your lives on as you move out, Elias family. You’ve been hosting a party celebrating Robbie’s soccer goal since 1998. Is he even still living at home after all that time?

Add to the expansion project mix that Disneyland Resort president George Kalogridis at D23′s Destination D mini-expo admitted they “hear us” about bringing the PeopleMover back, so plans have been created to make that possible. He went on to explain what Disney has to do to make the attraction comply with today’s safety standards (adding a walkway alongside the track with railings and emergency exit staircases, etc.). Changes made to the park’s Alice in Wonderland attraction immediately come to mind.

The PeopleMover was a very high-capacity, short line, efficient attraction that in and of itself would help to alleviate Disneyland’s Guest overcrowding problem. Plus, they could bring back the TRON SuperSpeed Tunnel section to the PeopleMover — synergy with TRON Legacy! Having the 3,000 Guest per hour capacity of the PeopleMover back will be a great start to lessen Disneyland’s overcrowding.

Frontierland Expansion

But that’s not all. Word is that Frontierland will be expanded with at least one new attraction, an E-Ticket (i.e., a super attraction).

Before Frontierland can be expanded, though, room needs to be created for that behind the berm. That’s why Disney is looking into where offsite — but nearby — they can move the backstage Circle D Ranch horse stables (then uses trailers to transport the park’s horses to/from the park) to open up room behind the Festival Arena to expand Frontierland with a new E-Ticket attraction which might be themed to Johnny Depp’s upcoming “Lone Ranger” movie.

Good! Big Thunder Ranch can certainly use something more exciting than a log cabin and a petting zoo. Big Thunder Trail can be much more than a backdoor path to Fantasyland behind Big Tbunder Mountain.

I hope all of these rumored changes are officially announced soon and come to pass. With these additions to Disneyland — along with the improvements at Disney California Adventure — my opinion is that the Disneyland Resort will be better than ever. Reply with your thoughts about this!

Disney’s “Magic Kingdom” movie takes place at Disney parks with good Toons battling evil Toons

This doesn’t remind me of “The Avengers” as much as the Disney Echo’s “You Make A Story” in which everyday people teamed up with good Toon characters to fight off evil Toon characters…

Disney’s ‘Magic’ ride – Theme park to star in film

By Marc Graser, Variety

September 30, 2010

While Disney is giving its more popular theme park attractions, like “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “The Haunted Mansion,” the bigscreen treatment, what happens when it runs out of rides to adapt?

All roads may lead to the Magic Kingdom, with the Mouse House considering making one of its theme parks the setting of a family adventure similar to Fox’s “Night at the Museum” franchise.

Ronald Moore, behind the recent reboot of the “Battlestar Galactica” TV series, already penned a script based on his own pitch for the project that Marc Abraham and Eric Newman will produce through their Universal-based Strike Entertainment shingle. The initial plot took place inside Disneyland.

But Disney and the producers are looking to develop “Magic Kingdom” further with a new scribe, who has yet to be hired.

While executives say the project isn’t a top priority, it is one they’re keeping their eyes on as a potential platform that could showcase a number of high-profile Disney characters, including Mickey Mouse and friends.

In other words, it would feature well-known Disney-owned icons rather than hint at them the way “Enchanted” did in 2007.

Disney’s Hyperion already publishes Ridley Pearson’s similar-sounding kidlit series, “Kingdom Keepers,” where a group of Florida teens are transformed into holographic guides at Disney World and battle “Sleeping Beauty’s” evil queen Maleficent as the park’s characters come to life.

Idea of a park-to-pic adaptation is nothing to scoff at, considering the “Pirates” franchise has earned $2.7 billion worldwide since the first set sail in 2003.

But “Magic Kingdom” brings with it a number of complications, given the precious real estate and iconic characters involved — one creative misstep could create one very expensive headache for a studio that’s starting to get back on track at the box office.

Disney is keen on producing more family-friendly films that can turn into strong franchises for all of the company’s divisions, and propel a slate of pics that also includes feel-good fare like the horse racing drama “Secretariat” and teen-skewing comedy “Prom.”

“Magic Kingdom” had already been in development before Rich Ross took the reins of the studio and tapped Sean Bailey as president of production.

Some at the studio are referring to “Magic Kingdom” as Disney’s own “Justice League” or “The Avengers” — movies that need other films to rollout at the megaplex in order to introduce audiences — especially younger moviegoers — to a cast of characters or overall properties they may not be fully familiar with.

At Warner Bros., “Justice League” would star DC Comics icons like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and the Flash, while Marvel’s “Avengers” features Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and the Incredible Hulk — characters that are getting their own pics first before teaming up. Paramount is distributing the actioner in summer 2012.

For now, Disney is focusing on launching “Tron: Legacy” in December, a reboot that will be prominently integrated into Anaheim’s California Adventure park starting next week. A fourth “Pirates of the Caribbean” is lensing in Hawaii, while Guillermo del Toro is readying an adaptation of “The Haunted Mansion,” and David Fincher is behind a new “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” actioner, whose original version was the basis of Disneyland’s original submarine ride. Also in development are scripts based on the “Jungle Cruise” ride and “Tomorrowland,” an outer space adventure that loosely ties in with the themed area of Disneyland.

Separately, Disney is eager to get new takes on classic characters like Maleficent that Tim Burton will helm after successfully relaunching “Alice in Wonderland” as a billion-dollar hit at the box office. A live-action retelling of “Cinderella” is also in the works, while the upcoming “Tangled” is an animated take on Rapunzel.

All could eventually wind up in “Magic Kingdom” in some form.

Disney’s “Let the memories begin” promotional campaign

King of CartoonsDisney’s latest ad campaign is ripping off Pee-Wee’s Playhouse where each week the King of Cartoons would say, “Let the cartoon… begin!”

Disney is hoping that “Let the memories begin” will convince you to take a Disney vacation in the next 12 months. Do you think it will work? Frankly, I think they’ve done much better and this is lame.

I’m just sayin’…

At 3:27 into this video you can hear the King of Cartoons start introducing that episode’s animated feature “Let the cartoon….. begin!” YouTube video
